Translation commentary on 1 Chronicles 12:5

Shemariah (verse 5): Revised Standard Version as well as most other versions use the shorter more familiar form of this name. The spelling in the Masoretic Text here is actually “Shemaryahu” (so Traduction œcuménique de la Bible, La Bible Pléiade; similarly Osty-Trinquet).

Shephatiah the Haruphite (verse 5): Shephatiah is the shorter more familiar form of this name, which most versions use. The spelling in the Masoretic Text here is actually “Shephatyahu” (so Traduction œcuménique de la Bible, La Bible Pléiade; similarly Osty-Trinquet). The Haruphite refers to Shephatiah. Haruphite probably refers to a place that is not known today. But it may refer to someone from the Calebite clan of Hareph (1 Chr 2.51). Revised Standard Version has followed the marginal correction in the Masoretic Text. The text itself reads “Hariphite.”
