Translation commentary on Luke 7:43

Exegesis:

hupalambanō (also 10.30 but in a different meaning) ‘I suppose,’ ‘I imagine,’ implying a certain caution on Simon’s part, as to what Jesus’ question may lead up to.

hō to pleion echarisato ‘(he) for whom he cancelled most,’ i.e. the greatest debt.

orthōs ekrinas ‘you have judged correctly.’ This conclusion prepares the way for Jesus’ accusing application of the parable in v. 44.

Translation:

The position of the asyndetic I suppose is rather free; in several languages (included the Greek) it is initial, in others final. Some other renderings are, ‘I think’ (Marathi), ‘in my opinion’ (Javanese), ‘to (lit. as in) my mind’ (Batak Toba). Otherwise than in 2.44 the verb does not suggest that what the speaker thinks is contrary to fact.

The rendering of to whom he forgave more should preferably echo v. 42, but if the expression used there cannot be fitted into the syntactic position here, one may shift to a more indirect statement, e.g. ‘the one whose debt was much’ (Toraja-Sa’dan).

You have judged rightly, or some other, idiomatic expression of approval, “You are right” (New English Bible), ‘right your supposition/opinion/conjecture’ (Bahasa Indonesia, Toraja-Sa’dan, Balinese), ‘you speak truly’ (Tae’).
