Exegesis:
kai ēgagon auton pros ton Iēsoun ‘and they brought it to Jesus,’ either the close of the preceding part of the story (cf. New English Bible, Good News Translation), or the beginning of a new part (cf. Revised Standard Version), preferably the latter. Agents of this and the following acts in this verse are the two disciples.
kai epiripsantes autōn ta himatia epi ton pōlon ‘and after throwing their clothes upon the colt.’ himatia means here ‘top clothes.’
epiriptō † ‘to throw (something) upon (something).’ Here its meaning is close to ‘spreading.’
epebibasan ton Iēsoun ‘they mounted Jesus (on it).’ For epibibazō cf. on 10.34.
Translation:
It … the colt. The sequence of pronominal before nominal reference may have to be reversed.
Throwing, or, ‘laying,’ ‘spreading,’ if ‘to throw’ would suggest violence.
Garments, see on “cloak” in 6.29. The plural is distributive.
On the colt, sometimes preferably, ‘on the back of the colt.’
They set Jesus upon it. If a literal rendering would suggest a child, or an invalid (as in 10.34), one may say, ‘they caused Jesus to mount it’ (Tagalog), ‘helped Jesus get on it, or, on the animal’ (cf. Good News Translation, Sranan Tongo, Bahasa Indonesia 1968).
