SIL Translator’s Notes on Proverbs 10:22

10:22

In this verse, the second line adds to the thought of the first.

22a The blessing of the LORD enriches,

22b and He adds no sorrow to it.

10:22a

The blessing of the LORD enriches: This clause emphasizes that the LORD’s blessing, not other things, is the source of wealth. Some ways to clearly express this emphasis are:

The blessing of the Lord is what brings riches (Revised English Bible)
-or-
It is the Lord ’s blessing that makes you wealthy (Good News Translation)

blessing: The word blessing refers here to the favor or kindness that the LORD shows to a person. See the note on “Blessings” in 10:6a.

10:22b

and He adds no sorrow to it: There are two ways to interpret this clause:

(1) The LORD does not add trouble/sorrow along with the wealth that he gives. For example:

and he adds no sorrow with it (New Revised Standard Version)

(2) Painful toil does not add anything to the wealth that the LORD gives. For example:

Hard work can make you no richer. (Good News Translation)

The Display follows interpretation (1), but both interpretations are well supported. You may use either one. It is recommended that whatever interpretation you follow, you put the other interpretation in a footnote.
