1:4a The roads to Zion mourn,
The roads to Zion are like people who mourn for their dead.

The roads ⌊that lead⌋ to Zion/Jerusalem ⌊where the Temple stands⌋ are like sad people,
1:4b because no one comes to her appointed feasts.
Nobody comes to worship ⌊at the Temple⌋ during the holy feasts.

⌊because⌋ nobody comes to celebrate the annual festivals.
1:4a-bNo one comes to the Temple now to worship on the holy days. (GNTD)

The⌊empty⌋ roads that lead to the Temple at Mount Zion are ⌊sad,⌋ like mourners at a burial.
1:4c All her gates are deserted;
There is nothing to hear at the city gates. (EEB)
