9:40a but Abimelech pursued him, and Gaal fled before him.

Abimelek ⌊fought him and made him run away⌋ and chased him as far as the town gate.

⌊Gaal was losing and ran away,⌋ so Abimelek chased him to the town gate.

9:40b And many Shechemites fell wounded all the way to the entrance of the gate.

Many of Gaal’s men died while they ran away.
-or-
Abimelek and his men ⌊caught and⌋ killed many of them before they reached the town.
