8:1a Then the men of Ephraim said to Gideon, “Why have you done this to us?

The people of the Ephraim clan said to Gideon, “Why did you (sing.) do this to us? (excl.)

The descendants of Ephraim said to Gideon, “You have treated us badly.

8:1b Why did you fail to call us when you went to fight against Midian?”

Why did you not summon us to fight with you against the Midianites?”
-or-
When you went to fight the people of Midian you should have asked us to join you.”

8:1c And they contended with him violently.

And they strongly criticized him.

And they argued strongly with him.
