7:4a Then the LORD said to Gideon, “There are still too many people.

But Yahweh said to Gideon: “There are still too many soldiers.

7:4b Take them down to the water,

Bring (sing.) them down to the water

Take them down to the riverbank to drink.

7:4c and I will sift them for you there.

and there I will choose some of them for you.

⌊While they drink⌋ I will choose those who will go with you.

7:4d If I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go.

When I say, ‘This man will go with you,’ he will go.

Those whom I choose will go with you.

7:4e But if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”

When I say, ‘That man will not go with you,’ he will not go.”

But those whom I reject will not go with you.”
