The people of Midian oppressed Israel severely.

6:2b Because of the Midianites, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.

⌊To escape from them,⌋ the Israel people hid in caves and steep places in the mountains.

Because of them the Israelites had to hide in mountain holes, in caves and in places that are difficult to reach.
