20:42a So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness,

They fled from the Israel soldiers and ran toward the wilderness

So they ran away from the soldiers of Israel and away from the towns.

20:42b but the battle overtook them,

but they were not able to escape the fighting.
-or-
But they were not able to escape.

20:42c and the men coming out of the cities struck them down there.

The Israel soldiers went out from the towns and killed them.

The soldiers of Israel came out of the towns to ⌊hunt for them and⌋ kill them.
