1:24a and when the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him,

These people saw a man leaving the town. They said to him,

⌊The men they sent⌋ saw a man who was leaving Bethel. They asked him

1:24b “Please show us how to get into the city, and we will treat you kindly.”

“Tell us how to get into the city. ⌊If you help us get into the city⌋ we will treat you well.”
-or-
to tell them how to enter the city. ⌊If the man helped them⌋ they would make sure that nobody would hurt him.
