The descendants of Judah and Joseph conquered towns in Canaan

1:1a After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD,

After Joshua died, the people of Israel consulted Yahweh.

After Joshua died, the Israel people asked Yahweh:

1:1b “Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites?”

⌊They asked,⌋ “Which of us should go first to attack the Canaanites?”
-or-
“Which ⌊of our (excl.) clans⌋ should be the first to go and attack the Canaanites?”
