SIL Translator’s Notes on Habakkuk 2:9

2:9a Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,

You (sing.) will suffer, you who get riches/wealth for your house by doing evil!
-or-
Yahweh⌋ will punish you (plur.) ! You made your families rich by violence.
-or-
“I will punish/destroy ⌊the Babylonians⌋ because they became rich by being cruel/evil to others.

2:9b to place his nest on high and escape the hand of disaster!

You (sing.)will suffer⌋ , you who set your nest high to avoid evil/disaster!
-or-
You (plur.) tried to make your own home safe from harm and danger.
-or-
They wanted to make their kingdom as safe as possible from those who might destroy it.

2:9a-b (reordered)

You (sing.) made your family rich by being cruel to others. You also tried to make your own home safe from harm and danger. Because you did all those things, ⌊God⌋ will punish/destroy you.
