Section 1:12–2:1

Habakkuk complained to Yahweh the second time

1:12a Are You not from everlasting, O LORD,

⌊Then I said,⌋ “Yahweh, have you (sing.) not existed forever?
-or-
⌊Then I, Habakkuk, prayed,⌋ “Yahweh, from the very beginning you are God.

1:12b my God, my Holy One? We will not die.

(New International Version) My God, my Holy One, you will never die.

My God, ⌊you (sing.) are⌋ holy, and you will continue to live/exist forever.
-or-
You are completely pure and will live/exist forever. I worship you.

1:12c O LORD, You have appointed them to execute judgment;

Yahweh, you (sing.) chose/sent the Chaldeans/Babylonians to punish ⌊your people⌋ .
-or-
Yahweh, you decided that the Chaldeans/Babylonians ⌊will bring your⌋ punishment ⌊upon us (excl.) by conquering us⌋ .

1:12d O Rock, You have established them for correction.

(New American Standard Bible) And You, O Rock, have destined them to punish.

You (sing.), Protector/Shelter, established them so that they could correct ⌊us (excl.) ⌋ .
-or-
You are like a rock which protects ⌊us⌋ . You will make them strong so that they rebuke ⌊us for our sins⌋ .

1:12c-d (reordered)

Yahweh, you (sing.) are ⌊our⌋ Protector/Refuge! You decided to use the Babylonians to rebuke us (excl.) and punish ⌊us for our wrongdoings⌋ .
