SIL Translator’s Notes on Ezra 9:8

9:8a But now, for a brief moment,

But now, for a short time,
-or-
And yet in recent history/days,

9:8b grace has come from the LORD our God to preserve for us a remnant

Yahweh, our (incl.) God, has given/shown mercy to us by causing us to escape/survive ⌊our time/years as captives in Babylon⌋.
-or-
our God, Yahweh, was kind to us to help/enable some of us to survive ⌊and return to our own land⌋ ⌊from Babylon⌋.
-or-
Yahweh our (excl.) God, you have treated us with compassion. You preserved/protected us and brought us out ⌊of Babylon to this place⌋.

9:8c and to give us a stake in His holy place.

He has given us (incl.) the right/permission to approach/meet him at his holy temple
-or-
His sacred temple has been rebuilt and we dwell around/near it.
-or-
Once again we have a permanent home close to where you dwell.

9:8d Even in our bondage, our God has given us new life and light to our eyes.

and so brightened our (incl.) eyes again and restored/revived some life in our slavery/servitude.
-or-
And by this, God is reviving our spirits, and in a small way we slaves feel alive again.
-or-
In this way, you give us (excl.) new courage/hope. It is as if we were dead in slavery and are starting to live again.
