SIL Translator’s Notes on Ezra 8:18

8:18a And since the gracious hand of our God was upon us,

Because the good/kind hand of our (incl.) God was upon us (excl.) ⌊to give us success⌋,
-or-
Because our God was helping/blessing us,

8:18b they brought us Sherebiah—a man of insight from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel—

they sent us (excl.) Sherebiah, a man of insight/understanding from the family/clan of Mahli, who was the son of Levi, the son of Israel.
-or-
a wise man named/called Sherebiah was brought to us. His ancestor was Mahli the grandson of Levi the son of Israel/Jacob.

8:18c along with his sons and brothers, 18 men;

He ⌊brought with him⌋ his sons and brothers. They were eighteen (18) men in all.
-or-
Sherebiah ⌊came with⌋ eighteen of his sons and kinsmen/relatives.

8:18a-c (reordered)

They sent us (excl.) 18 men. These were Sherebiah and his sons and brothers. He was a man of insight from the clan of Mahli. Mahli was the son of Levi, the son of Israel. This happened because our (incl.) God was helping us.
