officers: The Greek word here is general, “servant.” But 5:24–26 makes it clear that they served the captain of the temple guard and were temple guards. These guards protected the temple area, and arrested or removed anyone misbehaving in the temple area. Here are some other ways to translate this word:

temple guards (God’s Word)

temple police (Contemporary English Version)

did not find them there: The officers did not know that the apostles were not in the jail. But in some languages the word find implies they did. In those languages translate the correct meaning. For example:

did not see them there
-or-
found that they were not there

them: The pronoun them refers to the apostles.

5:22b

So: The Greek conjunction that the Berean Standard Bible translates as So is usually translated as “and.” Here is another way to translate this:

and (Revised Standard Version)

But going back and reporting is the result of not finding the apostles in the jail, so it may be more natural in your language to use So here.

they returned with the report: The officers returned to the Sanhedrin and told them that the apostles were not in the jail. Their words occur in 5:23.
