SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 7:12

7:12a So the king got up in the night and said to his servants,

Then the king arose in the night and said to his officers,

-or-

The king heard the news,⌋ and got out of bed in the middle of the night to speak to his men. He said to them,

-or-

It was still dark, but the king got up. He said to his officials/advisers that

7:12b “Let me tell you what the Arameans have done to us.

“Let me tell you (plur.) what the Aramean/Syrian ⌊soldiers⌋ are trying to do.

-or-

“I will/can tell you something. Those men of Aram/Syria are trying to trick us.

-or-

he wanted to warn them about what the Arameans/Syrians were planning to do to them.

7:12c They know we are starving,

They know that we (incl.) are hungry.

-or-

They are aware that we have nothing to eat.

-or-

The Arameans/Syrians knew that the people of Samaria were starving.

7:12d so they have left the camp to hide in the field,

So they have gone out of their camp to hide in the fields.

-or-

This is why they have left their tents and are hiding in the open country.

-or-

So they had left their camp and concealed themselves in the wild/bush country ⌊nearby⌋ .

7:12e thinking, ‘When they come out of the city,

They think that we (incl.) will have to leave the city.

-or-

They feel sure that we will leave our city ⌊to look for food⌋ .

-or-

They were hoping that the people of Samaria would come out of their city.

7:12f we will take them alive and enter the city.’”

Then they will capture us alive and enter ⌊our (incl.) ⌋ city.”

-or-

If we (incl.) do that,⌋ they will be able to catch us and go into our city.”

-or-

Then they could capture them and take/possess Samaria.
