SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 3:24

3:24a But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel,

But when the Moabites approached the Israelites’ camp,

-or-

But when the Moabite soldiers reached the place where the Israelites were staying,

3:24b the Israelites rose up and attacked them, and they fled before them.

the Israelite ⌊soldiers⌋ attacked them and forced them to flee.

-or-

the Israelite ⌊soldiers⌋ appeared and attacked them! The Moabite ⌊soldiers then⌋ ran away ⌊from them⌋ .

3:24c So the Israelites invaded their land

The Hebrew text is more literally “and they went in it.” Other ancient translations read “and they went against them” (Syriac) and “as they went entering” (LXX). The exact original text is uncertain.

And the Israel ⌊soldiers⌋ advanced,

The Israel ⌊soldiers⌋ continued chasing ⌊them back into their own⌋ land

3:24d and struck down the Moabites.

killing the Moabites.

killing/destroying as they went.
