SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 23:2

23:2a And he went up to the house of the LORD

Then he went to the house of Yahweh

-or-

Josiah went to the temple of Yahweh.

23:2b with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem,

and all the people of Judah and all the residents of Jerusalem went with him.

-or-

The people who lived in Jerusalem and ⌊the other towns of⌋ Judah all went with him.

23:2c as well as the priests and the prophets—

The priests and the prophets went too.

-or-

The sacrificers and the messengers of God also ⌊went to the temple⌋ .

23:2d all the people small and great—

All the people went, from the least important to the most important.

-or-

All kinds/sorts of people were present. Some were simple/ordinary and some were respected/honorable.

23:2a-d (reordered)

Then the king, the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets, the humble and the great, all went up to the temple of Yahweh.

23:2e and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant

They listened as the king read everything ⌊written⌋ in the scroll/book of the covenant

Josiah read aloud to them the whole/entire book containing ⌊Yahweh’s⌋ solemn agreement ⌊with Israel⌋ .

23:2f that had been found in the house of the LORD.

This had happened in the recent past. See 2 Kings 22:8, where this same book is referred to as the Book of the Law.

that ⌊Hilkiah⌋ had found in the house of Yahweh.

-or-

This book had been found ⌊by Hilkiah the priest in the temple of Yahweh.
