SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 1:9

1:9a Then King Ahaziah sent to Elijah a captain

Then he sent an army captain in charge/command of fifty ⌊men⌋ ⌊to meet/find⌋ Elijah,

-or-

So the king sent one of the officers in his army to ⌊arrest/capture⌋ Elijah.

1:9b with his company of fifty men.

and with the captain went his ⌊group/company of⌋ fifty men/soldiers.

-or-

He sent with the officer the fifty soldiers who were under his command.

1:9a-b (combined)

Then he sent an army officer and his ⌊company/group of⌋ fifty soldiers to ⌊arrest/catch⌋ Elijah.

1:9c So the captain went up to Elijah,

The ⌊army⌋ captain went to ⌊search for⌋ Elijah,

-or-

When the officer ⌊and his fifty soldiers⌋ got/came/drew near Elijah,

1:9d who was sitting on top of a hill,

and there he was, sitting on a hilltop!

-or-

they found/saw him sitting high up on a hill!

1:9e and said to him,

The captain said to him,

-or-

The officer told him,

1:9f “Man of God, the king declares, ‘Come down!’”

“Man of God, the king commands, ‘Come (sing.) down!’”

-or-

“You prophet of God, the king has ordered you (sing.) to get down here!”
