16:3a Instead, he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel

He acted in the same way as Israel’s kings acted.

Instead he did the ⌊evil⌋ things that the kings of Israel were doing.

-or-

⌊He chose⌋ ⌊instead⌋ to follow/imitate the ⌊bad⌋ example of Israel’s chiefs.

16:3b and even sacrificed his son in the fire,

He even put his son into the fire as a sacrifice.

-or-

Indeed, he sacrificed his own son as a burnt offering ⌊to false/pagan gods⌋ .

16:3c according to the abominations of the nations

This was the disgusting/horrific practice of the ⌊other/foreign⌋ nations.

-or-

By doing this, he was committing the ⌊same⌋ terrible sins as the ⌊pagan⌋ tribes/peoples had.

16:3d that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.

Yahweh had forced these nations out ⌊of the land⌋ when the Israelites arrived.

-or-

Yahweh had caused/allowed the people of Israel to send/drive these ⌊other⌋ tribes/peoples away ⌊from the land⌋ .
