16:18a And on account of the king of Assyria

He did the following⌋ on account of the king of Assyria:

He acted in the following way⌋ for the sake of Assyria’s king/ruler:

16:18b he removed the Sabbath canopy

The exact nature and purpose of this structure is uncertain.

He took away the Sabbath covering/sunshade

-or-

Ahaz removed the structure under which people walked on the weekly day of rest.

16:18c they had built in the temple

that had been erected at the temple.

-or-

It had been set up at/by ⌊Yahweh’s⌋ house.

16:18b-c (reordered)

He/Ahaz tore down the covered walkway by ⌊which people entered⌋ the temple on Yahweh’s day of rest.

16:18d and closed the royal entryway outside the house of the LORD.

The Hebrew text of 16:18c is uncertain and its meaning unclear.

He also removed the king’s entrance to the temple of Yahweh.

He also closed his private entrance into Yahweh’s house.
