SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 15:35

15:35a Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away;

But the local shrines were not destroyed,

-or-

However, he did not have the local places of worship removed/destroyed.

15:35b the people continued sacrificing

and the people continued offering sacrifices

-or-

The people ⌊of Judah⌋ still brought animal sacrifices

15:35c and burning incense there.

and burning incense at those shrines.

-or-

and sweet-smelling spices to offer them ⌊to God⌋ at these places/altars.

15:35d Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD.

The Hebrew word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as “rebuilt” is literally “built.”

Jotham built the Upper Gate of the house of Yahweh.

-or-

Jotham ⌊had his men/workers⌋ build the higher gate at the temple of Yahweh.

15:35a-d (reordered)

He/Jotham built the upper gate/door for Yahweh’s temple. However, he did not remove the local shrines and people continued to bring sacrifices and incense to be burned there.
