11:11a And the guards stood with weapons in hand

The guards took their positions, each of them holding his sword in his hand.

The soldiers held/took their swords

11:11b surrounding the king

They all stood surrounding the king

and surrounded the king ⌊to protect him⌋ .

11:11c by the altar and the temple,

very close to the altar and the temple,

They stood near the altar and the temple,

11:11d from the south side to the north side of the temple.

from the south side of the ⌊temple⌋ building to the north side of the ⌊king’s⌋ house.

⌊guarding the way⌋ from the southern side of the temple to the northern side of the palace.
