35:21a But Neco sent messengers to him, saying,

But Neco sent messengers to give Josiah this message,

King Neco sent men to King Josiah. These men told him that

35:21b “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah?

“King of Judah, there is no reason for you and me to fight.
-or-
there was no quarrel between him and their king.

35:21c I have not come against you today,

I have not come to fight against you today.
-or-
They said, “Our king is not attacking you at this time.

35:21d but I am fighting another dynasty.

I am fighting against another kingdom.
-or-
We are here to attack a different kingdom.

35:21e God told me to hurry;

God told me to do this quickly.
-or-
God told us that we must hurry.

35:21f so stop opposing God, who is with me,

I am doing what God told me to do, so don’t fight against me.
-or-
God is on our side and you must not try to oppose him.

35:21g or He will destroy you!”

If you do fight me, God will surely kill you.”
-or-
If you do that, God will punish you.”
