SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 3:11

3:11a So God said to him,

Then God/he said to Solomon,

So he said to Solomon,

God replied,

3:11b “Since you have asked for this

“You have asked me for a ⌊wise/understanding⌋ heart.
-or-
“⌊It is good that⌋ you have asked this.
-or-
“⌊I am pleased that⌋ you have asked this.

3:11c instead of requesting long life

You did not ask for many years of life.
-or-
You did not ask ⌊me⌋ ⌊to give⌋ you a long life.
-or-
You have not asked to live for a long time

3:11d or wealth for yourself

You did not ask for wealth for yourself,
-or-
You did not ask ⌊me⌋ ⌊to give⌋ you wealth/riches.
-or-
or to become rich/wealthy

3:11e or death for your enemies—

and you did not ask for your enemies to die.
-or-
You did not ask ⌊me⌋ to put your enemies to death.
-or-
or for your enemies to be killed.

3:11f but you have asked for discernment to administer justice—

But you have asked me to help you understand how to be a just leader/ruler!
-or-
Instead, you asked me to make you a wise and fair/righteous king/ruler!
-or-
You asked/want ⌊me to give you⌋ wisdom to rule/lead ⌊my people⌋ in a way that is just.

3:11a-f (reordered)

God said to Solomon, “You have asked for wisdom to rule my people wisely and justly. You have not asked to receive anything for yourself, whether long life, wealth, or the death of your enemies. So….
