SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 20:39

20:39a As the king passed by, he cried out to the king:

The king passed/came by. The prophet cried/called out to him.
-or-
The prophet called out to King Ahab when/as he was passing by.

20:39b “Your servant had marched out into the middle of the battle,

He said, “I your servant went ⌊to fight⌋ where the battle was heavy/hot.
-or-
“My lord the king, I was in the middle of the battle.

20:39c when suddenly a man came over with a captive

Suddenly a man brought me a captive/prisoner.
-or-
At that moment someone put me in charge of a soldier whom he had captured.

20:39d and told me, ‘Guard this man!

He said, ‘You (sing) must guard this man.
-or-
He told me to keep watch over him.

20:39e If he goes missing for any reason, your life will be exchanged for his life,

Indeed, if he gets away, it will be your (sing) life in place of his life.
-or-
He said to me, ‘If this soldier/prisoner escapes, you (sing) will take his place.

20:39f or you will weigh out a talent of silver.’

Or you will have to pay ⌊a fine of⌋ seventy-five pounds of silver.’
-or-
Otherwise you (sing) must pay ⌊me⌋ a full thirty-four kilos of silver.’
