20:23a Meanwhile, the servants of the king of Aram said to him,

Meanwhile the servants/officials of the king of Aram were telling him,

The king of Aram/Syria was also getting advice from his men/officials. They told him,

20:23b “Their gods are gods of the hills.

“The gods ⌊of Israel⌋ are gods ⌊with power in/over⌋ hills/mountains.

“The gods ⌊of our(incl.) enemies⌋ are mountain gods.

20:23c That is why they prevailed over us.

Therefore/So ⌊their army⌋ was stronger than ours.(incl.)

That is the reason why our(incl.) enemies were able to defeat us.

“⌊The Israelites⌋ were stronger than we(incl.) were because they ⌊worship⌋ the gods of the hills/mountains.

20:23d Instead, we should fight them on the plains;

But if we(incl.) fight them on flat/level ground,

We(incl.) need to do battle with them on the plains/lowlands.

20:23e surely then we will prevail.

our(incl.) ⌊men/army⌋ will certainly be stronger than their ⌊men/army⌋.

Then we(incl.) will definitely overcome/defeat them.

But we(incl.) will be stronger than they are if we fight on level ground.
