SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 18:26

18:26a And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it,

Then the prophets took one of the bulls that they were given/shown, and they prepared it ⌊to be offered as a sacrifice⌋.
-or-
So the prophets of Baal chose their bull. They ⌊killed/slaughtered it and⌋ made it ready ⌊for a burnt offering⌋.

18:26b and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon,

Then, from early morning until midday/noon, they called/cried out to Baal.
-or-
When the sun rose they began to call/pray to Baal. ⌊They continued calling/praying⌋ until the sun was high in the middle of the sky.
-or-
Then for/during the entire morning they prayed to ⌊their god⌋ Baal,

18:26c shouting, “O Baal, answer us!”

They shouted/called, “Answer us, Baal!”
-or-
They begged Baal to listen to them.
-or-
asking him/Baal to answer them ⌊by sending fire⌋.

18:26d But there was no sound, and no one answered

But there was no sound/voice ⌊to be heard⌋. No one answered.
-or-
But there was no answer, no voice/sound.
-or-
But they heard no reply.

18:26e as they leaped around the altar they had made.

So they danced/leaped wildly around the altar that had been built ⌊for them⌋.
-or-
Then they also began to leap/jump ⌊in frenzy/worship⌋ around ⌊their⌋ new altar.
