16:34a In Ahab’s days, Hiel the Bethelite rebuilt Jericho.

In Ahab’s time, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt ⌊the city of⌋ Jericho.

While Ahab was king of Israel, a man from Bethel named Hiel had Jericho ⌊city⌋ built again.

16:34b At the cost of Abiram his firstborn he laid its foundation,

He laid its foundation with the loss/death of Abiram his first son.

But when the bottom stones were put in place, Hiel’s oldest son Abiram died.

16:34c and at the cost of Segub his youngest he set up its gates,

And while he was finishing the gates, his youngest son Segub died.

When the city gates were put in place, his youngest son Segub died.

16:34d according to the word that the LORD had spoken through Joshua son of Nun.

This happened just as Yahweh had told Joshua son of Nun.⌊ ⌋
