9:20a To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews.

When I am with Jewish people, I follow Jewish customs, so that by my help, the Jewish people will follow ⌊Christ⌋.

⌊For example,⌋ ⌊when I preach⌋ to the Jews, I behave the way Jews behave, so that I will cause Jews ⌊to believe in Christ⌋.

9:20b To those under the law I became like one under the law

They submit to the law ⌊of Moses⌋, and so I also submit to the law ⌊of Moses⌋,

The Jews obey the laws ⌊that God gave to Moses⌋. So ⌊when I preach to the Jews⌋, I follow those laws,

9:20c (though I myself am not under the law),

even though I am not subject to that law.

in spite of the fact that I am not obligated to obey those laws.

9:20d to win those under the law.

⌊I do this⌋ so that by my help, those who submit to the law ⌊of Moses⌋ will follow ⌊Christ⌋.

⌊I behave like that⌋ so that I will cause those who obey Moses’ laws ⌊to believe in Christ⌋.
