But King David said to Ornan, “No,

21:24b I insist on paying the full price,
I must pay you the whole price.

I am buying it for the normal price.
21:24c for I will not take for the LORD what belongs to you,
I will not take anything that is yours and give it to Yahweh.

I cannot offer something to Yahweh that belongs to you.
21:24d nor will I offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
I cannot offer him a burnt offering that has cost me nothing.”

But King David refused and told Ornan that he would buy the place for its full price. He/David did not want to give Yahweh something that belonged to Ornan. Neither did he want to offer burnt offerings that cost him nothing.

King David replied, “I will not offer Yahweh that which belongs to you. It would not be a sacrifice if it didn’t cost me anything. Therefore, I must pay the full price.”
