5:14a or wealth lost in a failed venture,

Something may happen in the future that causes their money to disappear. (EEB)

5:14b so when that man has a son there is nothing to pass on.

There was a man who was guarding his riches against some misfortune. But he lost those riches through bad luck and there was nothing left for his children.
