10:2a Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an Elamite, said to Ezra:
Then Shecaniah, son of Jehiel, whose ancestor was Elam, responded ⌊to the problem⌋ and said to Ezra,
-or-
Then ⌊a man called⌋ Shecaniah spoke to Ezra. He was the son of Jehiel from the clan of Elam. He said:
10:2b “We have been unfaithful to our God
“We (incl.) have not been faithful/loyal/true to our God
-or-
We have not kept ⌊the oath/covenant we made with⌋ our God.
10:2c by marrying foreign women from the people of the land,
by marrying women from the local peoples who are not Jews.
-or-
We have taken for/as our (incl.) wives pagan/strange women from the people ⌊who live⌋ near us.
10:2d yet in spite of this, there is hope for Israel.
But even now there is still reason to have hope for Israel.
-or-
But although ⌊we (incl.) have done this,⌋ we believe that God will have mercy on us, the people of Israel.
