SIL Translator’s Notes on Ezra 8:35

8:35a Then the exiles who had returned from captivity

Then those who came back to their homeland ⌊of Judah⌋ after living as captives/prisoners ⌊in Babylon
-or-
Then the descendants of families originally from ⌊Judah⌋ who returned from ⌊Babylon

8:35b sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel:

gave/offered completely burnt sacrifices to the God of Israel.
-or-
burned animals entirely as a gift to the God of Israel.

8:35c 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, 77 lambs,

They gave/offered⌋ twelve (12) bulls for all the people of Israel, as well as ninety-six (96) male sheep, and seventy-seven (77) male lambs.
-or-
They burned⌋ twelve young male cows, one for ⌊each clan of⌋ Israel, as well as ninety-six adult/mature male sheep and seventy-seven young male sheep.

8:35d and a sin offering of 12 male goats.

Then they also gave/offered⌋ twelve (12) male goats as a sacrifice to purify the people from sin.
-or-
They also burned⌋ twelve male goats so that God would forgive their sins.

8:35e All this was a burnt offering to the LORD.

All these were completely burned as sacrifices to Yahweh.
-or-
All of these animals were ⌊killed and⌋ given/offered to Yahweh by burning them entirely.

8:35a-e (reordered)

Then those who came back to their homeland ⌊of Judah⌋ after living as captives ⌊in Babylon⌋ gave sacrifices to Yahweh, the God of Israel. These were all completely burned ⌊on the altar⌋. There were twelve bulls and ninety-six male sheep and seventy-seven male lambs. They also gave twelve male goats that were sacrifices for the sins of the people. These sacrifices were for all the people of Israel.
