11:3a So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob,

So Jephthah ran away from his brothers, and went to live in the land of Tob.

So Jephthah left his half-brothers and he went to stay in the land of Tob.

11:3b where worthless men gathered around him and traveled with him.

⌊While he was there⌋ some worthless men gathered around him and they made him their leader.

He was joined by a number of men who would do anything for money, and they followed him.
