9:49a So each man also cut his own branch and followed Abimelech.

Each of them cut a branch, and they followed Abimelek.

Then each one of them cut off a branch and followed him.

9:49b Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them,

They piled the branches against the strong room of the temple and set it on fire along with all who were inside.

They piled up the branches beside the inner room of the temple. Then they burnt it with all those who were there.

9:49c killing everyone in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women.

That is how all the people in the tower of Shechem died. There were about a thousand men and women.

There were about a thousand (1,000) people, including men and women, in the tower. They all died along with the rest of the people of Shechem town.
