9:23a God sent a spirit of animosity between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem

God made him and the people of Shechem town fight one another.
-or-
Then God made the people of the town of Shechem be enemies to Abimelek

9:23b and caused them to treat Abimelech deceitfully,

They were no longer loyal to him.

and they turned against him.
