SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 19:14

19:14a So Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers,

Hezekiah took this letter/message from the hand of the messengers.

-or-

Hezekiah received this message from the ⌊Assyrian⌋ men/messengers.

19:14b read it,

He read it.

-or-

After he had read through it,

19:14a-b (reordered)

Hezekiah read the letter that Sennacherib’s men brought/gave him.

19:14c and went up to the house of the LORD

Then he went to the house of Yahweh.

-or-

he ⌊took/carried it⌋ to the temple of Yahweh.

19:14d and spread it out before the LORD.

The letter was perhaps in the form of a scroll that Hezekiah unrolled. He may have laid it out open on a flat surface or held it out open in his hands.

He spread/opened the letter in front of Yahweh.

-or-

There he showed the letter to Yahweh.
