9:17a Now the watchman standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu’s troops approaching,

There was a watchman/guard standing on the tower in Jezreel. When he saw Jehu’s company/group coming,

-or-

In ⌊the town of⌋ Jezreel, a soldier/man stood guard on top of a high building. He saw Jehu and his soldiers coming ⌊toward the town⌋ .

9:17b and he called out, “I see a company of troops!”

he shouted, “I can see a company/group ⌊of men⌋ coming ⌊toward us (incl.) ⌋ !”

-or-

So he called out ⌊a warning⌋ that he could see many soldiers approaching.

9:17c “Choose a rider,” Joram commanded.

Joram then said, “Find/Call (sing.) a horse rider.

-or-

King Joram said, “Choose someone with a horse.

9:17d “Send him out to meet them and ask,

Send him to meet this company/group. Tell him to ask them,

-or-

Command him to ride out to the soldiers and ask them

9:17e ‘Have you come in peace?’”

‘Is there peace ⌊between us (incl.) ⌋ ?’”

-or-

if they are coming as friends or enemies.”
