SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 5:18

5:18a So Solomon’s and Hiram’s builders, along with the Gebalites, quarried the stone

Byblos was the ancient Greek name of the city Jubail on the Mediterranean coast north of Israel. In Solomon’s time the city was called “Gebal,” and this is how it is referred to in the Hebrew text. You may wish to use the name Byblos if this is familiar to your readers.

So the skilled workers from Solomon and Hiram, together with the builders/artisans from Gebal, cut/shaped ⌊the stone blocks⌋.

The tradesmen/builders that Solomon and Hiram had sent worked with tradesmen/workers from ⌊the city of⌋ Gebal/Byblos. Together they cut ⌊the stones into shape⌋.

5:18b and prepared the timber and stone for the construction of the temple.

They made the timber and the stones ready to be used to build ⌊God’s⌋ house.

They prepared the wood and the stones for use in the construction of the temple.
