17:3a Now the LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David.

Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the example of his ancestor David who lived before him.

Yahweh was with King Jehoshaphat because he did the things that his ancestor King David had done.

17:3b He did not seek out the Baals,

He did not serve the Baal idols

He did not worship the idols called Baal.
