Translation commentary on Acts 19:5

The believers are willing, and so they permit themselves to be baptized. It is doubtful if this is to be referred to as rebaptism, since from the point of view of Luke these people were never really baptized in the Christian sense up to this time.

The pronoun they may be potentially ambiguous since literally reproduced it might in some receptor languages refer to the people of Israel mentioned just previously. Therefore, one may wish to say “when these believers whom Paul had found in Ephesus heard this.” This will then refer the reader back to the believers mentioned in verse 1.
