Exegesis:
meta de tauta ‘after this,’ i.e. the events told in 9.57-62.
anedeixen ho kurios heterous hebdomēkonta [duo] ‘the Lord appointed seventy [two] others.’ For ho kurios cf. on 1.6.
anadeiknumi ‘to appoint,’ ‘to commission.’
ana duo ‘two by two.’
pro prosōpou autou lit. ‘before his face,’ cf. on 9.52.
eis pasan polin kai topon ‘to every town and place.’ For topos meaning ‘inhabited place.’ It is less specific than polis.
hou ēmellen autos erchesthai ‘where he intended to go himself/in person.’ For mellō meaning ‘to intend.’
Translation:
Seventy, or “seventy-two”. If it is deemed necessary to mention the two alternatives, one should go in the text of the translation, the other in a footnote; to combine them in the text, e.g. by using ‘seventy[-two],’ is not advisable.
Others, or, ‘other disciples,’ i.e. than the twelve mentioned in 9.1ff.
For town cf. on “city” in 1.26. For place cf. on 4.37; in this context a term for ‘village’ (Tae’) is also acceptable.
