Exegesis:

kai kategelōn autou ‘but they laughed at him’; durative imperfect.

katagelaō (only here and parallels in the N.T.) with following genitive of the person, ‘to laugh at,’ ‘to jeer at.’

eidotes hoti apethanen ‘because they knew that she had died.’ eidotes (participle of oida ‘to know’) refers to positive knowledge.

Translation:

They laughed at him, or, ‘they mocked him.’

Knowing. They knew it to be an undeniable fact; hence more emphatical renderings, e.g. ‘because they knew very well’ (Bahasa Indonesia RC, similarly Balinese, Sundanese).
