Translation commentary on John 18:34

Does this question come from you…? is literally “from yourself are you saying this…?” New English Bible translates “Is that your own idea…?” New American Bible renders “Are you saying this on your own…?” The force of the question is to ascertain whether Pilate has any reason of his own, apart from the accusation of the Jewish leaders, to believe that Jesus claims to be the king of the Jews. Does this question come from you…? may often be rendered “Are you the one who thought of this question?” or “did you yourself have reason to ask this question?”
