Translation commentary on 1 Esdras 6:18

And the holy vessels of gold and of silver, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the house in Jerusalem and stored in his own temple: See the comments on 1 Esd 1.41 and 2.10.

These Cyrus the king took out again from the temple in Babylon, and they were delivered to Zerubbabel and Sheshbazzar the governor: See the comments on 1 Esd 2.11-12. Zerubbabel (see 1 Esd 5.5) is not mentioned in that passage, but he should be included here. Since Sheshbazzar is referred to as “the governor of Judah” (Good News Bible) in 1 Esd 2.12, it will be proper to identify him as such here, although “of Judah” is not in the Greek text.

Here is an alternative model for this verse:

• Nebuchadnezzar had taken the sacred objects made of gold and silver from the Temple in Jerusalem and put them in his own temple in Babylon, but King Cyrus had them taken back out, and given to Zerubbabel and also Sheshbazzar, the governor of Judah.
