Translation commentary on Wisdom 10:9

Some translations, such as Revised Standard Version, connect this verse with the next verse rather than the previous one. We suggest following Good News Translation in making it part of this section dealing with Lot.

Wisdom rescued from troubles those who served her: Good News Translation relates this to the previous verses by two subtle touches: (1) it begins with “But,” and (2) it speaks of “the danger,” thus referring the reader back to verse 6. New English Bible is similar: “But wisdom brought her servants safely out of their troubles.” Troubles is more literal, but Good News Translation “danger” is consistent with the context and not misleading. Those who served her may also be expressed as “those who obeyed her.”
