For even if they put forth boughs for a while: The connector For may be omitted here. The Greek refers to boughs or “branches”; Good News Translation uses “leaves,” but since leaves grow only on branches, it says the same thing. Another way to render this line is “They might grow big [or, old] enough to put out branches.”

Standing insecurely they will be shaken by the wind, and by the violence of the winds they will be uprooted: Another way of saying this is “but since they have shallow roots, the wind threatens [or, is a danger to] them, and storms will uproot them.”
